Recreational Coaches

Step 1: Gymnastics Foundations Introduction course

Coaches are introduced to the Fun, Fitness and FUNdamentals (3F) philosophy that applies to all gymnastics disciplines and discover ways it can be implemented during gymnastics classes.

Coaches also learn:

  1. About principles and guidelines for using games as a teaching tool;
  2. About the fundamental movement patterns common to all gymnastics sports;
  3. Some basic teaching and learning principles.

This 8-hour, hands-on course is held in a gym setting.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS COURSE?

Anyone interested in coaching gymnastics to beginner level recreational athletes.

PREREQUISITES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Coaches must be 15 years old.

Step 2: Gymnastics Foundations Theory course

 Coaches are introduced to a 6-step decision making process for ethical situations. They are also introduced to several basic concepts necessary for planning safe and effective gymnastics lessons, including:

  1. How to identify whether a situation presents ethical or legal issues;
  2. How to identify options, pros/cons, and possible consequences of their decisions;
  3. Key factors to consider when planning a lesson;
  4. Developmental characteristics of the participants and implications for the coach;
  5. Safety, risk management and how to develop an Emergency Action Plan.

This 8-hour theory course is held in a classroom setting.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS COURSE?

This course is designed for coaches who are working with beginner level recreational athletes between the ages of 6 and 12 years, in any gymnastics discipline.

PREREQUISITES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Coaches must also complete the Gymnastics Foundations - Introduction course.

Active Start

Gymnastics Foundations - Active Start

This course introduces coaches to the unique characteristics and needs of athletes between the ages of 6 months to 5 years.

Coaches learn how to:

  1. Develop the child using a holistic, multi-movement approach;
  2. Use developmental ages and stages for program groupings;
  3. Develop the 7 Active Start Fundamental Movement Patterns;
  4. Use Active Start games, rhymes, task cards and music;
  5. Develop Active Start age appropriate lessons plans.

This 9-hour, hands-on course takes place in a gym setting.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS COURSE?

Gymnastics coaches working with preschoolers between the ages of 6 months to 5 years.

Aerobic

Gymnastics Foundations - Aerobic

Coaches learn how to teach young participants the basic skills and movement patterns specific to Aerobic Gymnastics using a FUN approach in a safe environment.

Coaches also learn how to:

Teach CANGYM – Aerobic skills;

  1. Develop fitness activities that are FUN;
  2. Teach basic series and routines;
  3. Develop Aerobic specific lesson plans.

This 8-hour, hands-on course is held in a gym setting.

Aerobic Gymnastics coaches working with beginner level recreational athletes between the ages of 6 to 12.

Men's Artistic

Gymnastics Foundations - Artistic

Coaches learn how to teach young participants the basic skills and movement patterns specific to Artistic Gymnastics apparatus using a FUN approach in a safe environment.

Coaches also learn how to teach beginner level artistic gymnastics skills.

This 8-hour, hands-on course is held in a gym.

Men’s and Women’s Artistic Gymnastics coaches working with beginner level recreational athletes between the ages of 6 to 12.

Gymnastics Foundations - Rhythmic

Coaches learn to teach young participants the basic skills and movement patterns specific to Rhythmic Gymnastics using a FUN approach in a safe environment.

Coaches also learn how to:

  1. Teach skills with specific Rhythmic Gymnastics apparatus (Rope, Hoop, Ball, Ribbon, Clubs);
  2. Develop body alignment (posture, pointed toes, presentation of the hands, etc.);
  3. Develop basic series and routines.

This 9-hour, hands-on course is held in a gym setting.

Rhythmic Gymnastics coaches working with beginner level recreational athletes between the ages of 6 to 12.

Trampoline

Gymnastics Foundations - Trampoline

Coaches learn how to teach young participants the basic skills and movement patterns specific to Trampoline Gymnastics using a FUN approach in a safe environment.

Coaches also learn how to:

  1. Teach trampoline safely;
  2. Determine twisting dominance;
  3. Teach basic routines and passes;
  4. Adapt games for Trampoline gymnastics.

This 9-hour, hands-on course is held in a gym setting.
