2010 Canadian Gymnaestrada Opens In Winnipeg
Posted Thursday, July 1, 2010
WINNIPEG -- Gymnasts from across Canada ranging in age from eight to over eighty, have gathered in Winnipeg for two days of performances at the 2010 Canadian Gymnaestrada, part of a worldwide event celebrating sport for life.
Opening Ceremonies on Thursday will be followed by two days of performances by 28 groups from six provinces, with a minimum of 10 participants in each group participating at the same time.
“It’s a bit like Cirque to Soleil with theatrical performances and costumes,” says Elizabeth Bureaud of Gymnastics Canada.
“It’s not a competition but groups will be evaluated to determine which ones will go to the World Gymaestrada next year in Switzerland.”
Each performance lasts from 5 to 15 minutes and may combine various gymnastics disciplines, including rhythmic and artistic gymnastics and trampoline.
Evaulations are based on music, gymnastics elements, choreography and spectator appeal.
“One of the unique features of the event is to see some groups working together with performers anywhere from 10 to 70 years old,” says Bureaud.
At the last World Gymnaestrada held in 2007 Canada sent a team of more than 500 performers to the world’s single biggest sports event with 22,000 participants from over 50 countries.
