More medals for Canada at Indo-Pacific Trampoline and Tumbling Competition
Posted Friday, July 2, 2010

Kakegawa, JAPAN -- Canada’s trampoline and tumbling team at the Indo Pacific  Championships won its fifth gold medal of the competition on Friday with a victory by Ben Blais of Vancouver in double mini trampoline for the 10-12 age group category.

All but one of Canada’s gold medals so far have come in the double mini event with Chelsea Nerpio of Vancouver winning the over 17 women’s title, Alexa McPhee of Coquitlam, B.C. topping the field in the 13-14 women’s age group, and Justin Kaylan of Calgary placing first in the men’s 17 and over competition.

Amiel Clarke of Calgary got the Canadian team rolling with its first gold medal of the four-day competition on Wednesday with a surprise victory in the men’s over 17 individual trampoline event.

“It came as a huge surprise,” said Clark, who led the field after qualifications and held on to win in the 10-man final.

“It definitely puts a lot of pressure on to have the lead going into the final,” said Clarke.

“This gives a real boost of confidence because I showed that I could be consistent in my routines here which has been a problem for me over the last year. This was really enjoyable and I’d like to keep on improving and competing more internationally.”

Kailey McLeod of Toronto took the bronze medal in the women’s over-17 trampoline and Vincent Ng of Toronto was third in the same age group for men.

Nerpio, the most experienced member of the Canadian team, came into the meet as the medal favourite in the over 17 double mini event and lived up to expectations.

“I had a few problems, but overall I’m happy with how things went, especially my last pass,” said Nerpio, a member of Canada’s silver-medal winning team in double mini at the 2009 world championships.

“Not all my four passes were as clean as I would have liked but I prepared really well for this event and it paid off with the gold medal.”

Nerpio also finished fifth in individual trampoline and was 8th in the synchro event with partner Anita Cirillo of Vancouver.

The competition concludes on Saturday.
