MISSISSAUGA, Ont. -- National-team veteran Alex Seifert of Calgary and recently un-retired Emily Smith of Burlington, Ont., were in top form on Saturday, winning the men’s and women’s senior tumbling events at the Canada Cup.
Seifert finished well ahead of runner-up Charpentier Leclerc of Drummondville, Que.,and capped his run to gold with an eye-popping three twisting double somersaults on his final pass.
“I expected to win because I have a pretty big repertoire with a lot of skills, but it’s always a challenge when you add a move you haven’t done for a while like I did in the final,” said Seifert, who added a second gold medal in the double mini trampoline competition.
“I’m looking to peak at the world championships in November and this is a good step in that direction.”
In the women’s competition, Smith made a triumphant return to competition after a short-lived retirement following the 2009 world championships.
“I was doing some coaching and decided I really wanted to get back into it, and after five months off I’ve got a new perspective on things,” said Smith, who scored 127.400 points for the victory.
Julie Warnock of Airdrie, Alta., was second with 121.4 points and Kylie Petrie of Toronto was third at 121.2.
“I started training again two months ago and everything came back relatively quickly. I competed with the same passes I used at the worlds and I found I was more relaxed than I’ve ever been at a competition.”
In the women’s trampoline final, three-time Olympic medal winner Karen Cockurn and Rosannagh MacLennan, both of Toronto, placed third and fourth respectively, behind Zhong Xingping and Li Dan of China who finished 1-2.
In men’s trampoline, Marty Myers of Toronto was the top Canadian in 7th spot. China’s Tu Xiao took the gold.
In women’s double mini trampoline, Corissa Boychuk of Airdrie, Alta, won the gold.
