KAKEGAWA, Japan -- Kyle Clemmer of Edmonton edged Jumpei Sugiura of Japan for the gold medal in men’s over-17 tumbling at the Indo Pacific Trampoline and Tumbling Championships on Saturday, capping a strong overall showing by Canada’s age-group team.

Clemmer built an early lead in his first two passes and held on for the victory with a score of 125 points.

Sugiura had the top scores on three of the four passes but faltered badly on the other and had to settle for the silver medal with 124.9 points.

Amiel Clarke of Calgary took the bronze at 124.2 and Justin Kaylan of Calgary finished fourth with 119.1.

Clemmer, who has his sights on the age-group world championships in the fall, boosted Canada’s gold medal tally to six at the four-day event featuring competitions in age groups ranging from 11 to over 17 in individual, synchronized and double-mini trampoline and tumbling.

“I knew I could do well, it was just a matter of being consistent,” said Clemmer. “This is definitely the biggest international result so far for me and I just hope I can keep it going to get on the age group team for the world championships.”

In other events on Saturday, Cameron Quinlan of Vancouver was fourth in men’s 13-14 individual trampoline and Tatum Sawa and Hannah Popoff of Calgary were 9th and 10th in same age group for women.

In the 15-16 double mini final, Shannon Comeault, Alexandra Phillips-Taylor and Amanda Huygens, all of Vancouver, all made finals and finished 5th, 7th and 9th respectively.

In the men’s 15-16 event, Brett Babcock of Kingston, Ont., placed eighth.
