Gymnastics Canada statement regarding the McLaren Group Independent Gymnastics in Canada Review

OTTAWA, ON (January 25, 2023) – The Board and Staff of Gymnastics Canada are grateful to the team at McLaren Global Sport Solutions for their comprehensive report released today.  As noted in the Report, there was significant engagement from the gymnastics community which speaks to their commitment to being part of the solution.

The McLaren Report represents a very important step in the pathway to cultural change in the sport of gymnastics.  It highlights important themes and identifies shared concerns from the gymnastics community regarding the current state of the sport in Canada. The Report also provides insight into current initiatives and recommendations for change that will help to restore faith and revitalize the sport.

“We are committed to making the necessary cultural changes required to help ensure alignment between the values that we espouse and the lived experience of gymnasts across the country,” shared Gymnastics Canada Board Chair Jeff Thomson. “Sport is in a much-needed transition and we are resolved to do the necessary work so that the athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers and staff feel supported and proud to be participating in our sport.”

Leaders from Gymnastics Canada and the Provincial/Territorial member associations will be meeting as soon as possible to review the Report and to determine the best process to ensure proper oversight and to communicate progress. We anticipate announcing a Joint Community Update which will include a coordinated approach to address the issues and recommendations identified in the McLaren Report.
