Ottawa, ON (October 19, 2025) – Team Canada delivered a series of strong performances during the qualification rounds of the 2026 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, taking place in Rotterdam, Netherlands, from October 17 to 25. Held on October 17 and 19, the qualification rounds saw several Canadian athletes secure their spots in the team and individual finals.
Promising Performances from the Canadian Team
The Canadian women’s artistic gymnastics team, composed of Ellie Black, Gabrielle Black, Coralie Demers, Lia-Monica Fontaine, Lia Redick, and travelling reserve Zoe Tsaprailis, secured their place in the Team Final after finishing seventh in qualifications with a combined score of 160.130.
Lia-Monica Fontaine delivered an impressive performance, qualifying for two apparatus finals. She secured fourth place on vault with a score of 14.099 and fourth place on floor exercise with a score of 13.366.
Competing at her tenth World Championships, veteran Ellie Black continued to demonstrate her experience and consistency, qualifying for the All-Around Final after finishing 15th with a score of 53.466. Lia Redick also had an outstanding qualification round, securing her place in two finals. She finished tenth in the All-Around standings with a score of 53.599 and delivered a strong performance on floor exercise, placing second with a score of 13.433.
“The team demonstrated remarkable calm and confidence throughout training and qualifications. Despite having many young athletes, they showed incredible maturity, leadership, and support for one another. Ellie’s poise and professionalism set a wonderful example for the entire team. It was especially exciting to see such outstanding performances on vault and floor today, and to know that we achieved our target scores despite counting a few falls on beam. These results reflect the tremendous work happening behind the scenes, from the Integrated Support Team (IST), who have prioritized athlete health, to the coaches and team advisors who have worked tirelessly at their home gyms and training camps to implement targeted improvements. I believe everyone involved with Team Canada is inspired by today’s success. The athletes are proud of themselves and their teammates, and they are already motivated to build on this momentum. They know there is still room for improvement, and that even greater achievements are within reach over the coming year.” said Heather Ross McManus, Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Program Director at Gymnastics Canada.
On the men’s side, Sam Zakutney qualified for the men’s all-around final, finishing 25th in qualifications with a score of 78.764.
These results highlight Canada’s increasing presence in apparatus finals and the depth of talent within the national team on the world stage.
