Annual Report

2024–2025

Message from the Board

As we reflect on the 2024–2025 season, we do so with immense pride and deep appreciation for the people, performances, and partnerships that continue to elevate gymnastics in Canada.

This year reminded us all of the power of perseverance, teamwork, and passion. From Sophiane Méthot’s bronze medal in trampoline, to the women’s artistic team’s impressive fifth-place finish and the men’s artistic team’s strong eighth-place result, our athletes showcased remarkable resilience and excellence on the world stage in Paris. Their achievements not only inspired Canadians coast to coast but also reaffirmed the strength of our high-performance programs and the critical role of coaches, judges, provinces, and support teams in their journeys.

At the grassroots level, gymnastics continued to thrive across the country with more than 342,000 participants involved in our sport. This growth is a testament to the dedication of our provincial partners, local clubs, and the thousands of volunteers who give so generously of their time and expertise.

This year also marked major progress in our commitment to building a safer, more inclusive sport environment. From the launch of our One Badge compliance system to enhanced mental health training and the publication of our OSIC Sport Environment Assessment, we are proud to be taking meaningful steps forward in Safe Sport and athlete well-being.

We also strengthened our partnerships with organizations that share our vision for excellence and inclusion. Our new collaboration with Cirque du Soleil will create unique opportunities for our coaches and athletes, while our three-year agreement with You Can Play will provide valuable resources and education to strengthen equity, diversity, and inclusion across our gymnastics community.

Equally, we remain committed to elevating the workings of both the Board of Directors and GymCan itself, ensuring that our governance and leadership continue to evolve in pursuit of excellence at every level of our sport.

On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, we extend our heartfelt thanks to our athletes, coaches, judges, staff, partners, and volunteers. You are the reason our sport continues to grow, to inspire, and to lead. We look ahead with confidence and determination as we continue to shape a brighter future for gymnastics in Canada.

Paris 2024: Olympic Highlights

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games marked a defining moment for Canadian gymnastics—a celebration of history, legacy, and new milestones. Our athletes delivered record-breaking performances and historic results, excelling in both team and individual competitions. In trampoline, Sophiane Méthot carried forward Canada’s proud legacy with a brilliant bronze medal performance. In artistic gymnastics, Ellie Black made history of her own, competing in her fourth consecutive Olympic Games and continuing to inspire a generation. The men’s artistic team secured a full team spot at the Games for the first time since 2008, then delivered a strong eighth-place finish, while the women’s artistic team impressed with a fifth-place result in the team final. Together, these achievements showcased that with hard work, anything is possible.

Sophiane Méthot: Olympic Bronze Medalist (Trampoline)

A defining moment for Canadian gymnastics came when Sophiane Méthot soared to the podium in women’s trampoline, earning Canada a bronze medal with a routine that combined power, elegance, and composure under pressure.

After a strong qualifying round, she narrowly advanced to the finals in 8th place—the last spot available. Knowing she had nothing to lose, Sophiane delivered the performance of her lifetime in the final round. As the last competitor faltered, her score held strong, securing her a place in history and continuing Canada’s proud trampoline legacy on the Olympic stage.

Safe Sport

Building a Safer, Stronger Gymnastics for All

This past year marked several significant steps forward in creating a safer and more supportive gymnastics environment for everyone in Canada.

Following a recommendation from the McLaren Report, Gymnastics Canada established the Safety Steering Committee to strengthen safety and safeguarding measures across the organization. One of the committee’s first priorities has been preparing for the launch of our Safer & Stronger Safe Sport Strategy in January 2026, a comprehensive plan designed to embed safety, inclusion, and wellbeing into every level of our sport.

We also introduced enhanced screening requirements for all National Team Program members—including athletes, coaches, judges, integrated support team (IST) members, volunteers, committee members, the Board of Directors, and Gymnastics Canada staff. Through our work with One Badge, we can now conveniently track, monitor, and renew screening requirements annually, ensuring they remain current and consistent across the organization.

Two important partnerships advanced our Safe Sport work this year:

You Can Play

Together, we are building a more inclusive environment for 2SLGBTQI+ participants by offering education, resources, and awareness initiatives. This work will continue to evolve, supporting the development and implementation of a National Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Strategy.

Working with Parents in Sport (WWPIS)

Recognizing the essential role parents play in the gymnastics experience, we delivered webinars and resources to help them best support their athletes. In the year ahead, this work will expand, reaching more parents with practical tools and guidance.

In 2024, Gymnastics Canada underwent a Sport Environment Assessment (SEA) through the Office of the Sport Integrity Commissioner (OSIC). The SEA Report, along with Gymnastics Canada’s Response Letter and Commitments, was published in October. While OSIC has since dissolved and the SEA is no longer being monitored externally, Gymnastics Canada remains fully committed to fulfilling the recommendations and our stated commitments. Many of these actions will be embedded in our upcoming Safer & Stronger Safe Sport Strategy.

Another major initiative launched this year was the Culture of Excellence Project, supported by Own the Podium. A Culture Team—made up of athletes, coaches, judges, and IST members from across all disciplines—worked with two Culture and Wellbeing Facilitators to assess and improve the National Team environment. Following the CAAT survey in the fall, data were analyzed over the winter, and the team is now developing an Action Plan to implement meaningful cultural changes at the national level.

The fiscal year closed with a major transition in the Canadian sport landscape: on March 31, 2025, the Abuse-Free Sport program and OSIC officially ended. Gymnastics Canada has adopted the new Canadian Safe Sport Program at CCES and began the transition process in March, ensuring continued independent complaint management and safeguarding services for our community.

The Power of Volunteers

Where would gymnastics be without volunteers?

The answer is simple—nowhere close to where it is today. Volunteers are the foundation of our sport, giving their time, skills, and energy to support athletes, coaches, events, and the broader gymnastics community. Whether officiating at competitions, organizing logistics, or offering encouragement from the sidelines, their contributions are vital.

Their commitment reflects the very spirit of gymnastics: dedication, resilience, and community. We extend our sincere thanks to every volunteer who plays a part in helping our sport thrive across the country.

Thank you to the provincial/territorial gymnastics federations/associations, to our committee members, to all our dedicated volunteers and to our partners for their trust, support and collaboration.

Looking Ahead

As we move beyond the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, we carry forward the pride of our accomplishments while focusing on the road ahead. Our goal is to build a stronger, safer sport system for everyone and to strengthen our organization to allow our athletes, coaches and judges to continue shining on the international stage.

Launch a 2025–2028 Strategic Plan, to help guide the road to LA 2028.

Launch our Safe Sport strategy, with increased education, compliance, and community engagement.

Strengthen our internal high-performance structure and prepare for upcoming World Championships and the road to Los Angeles 2028.

Revisit the National Events Strategy to better deliver memorable events across all disciplines.
