Changes to the GymCan Board

January 14, 2026 | Corporate, News

When I joined the GymCan Board of Directors, my primary objective was to strengthen the organization’s operational effectiveness—both at the board level and across Gymnastics Canada as a whole.

We are making strong progress, and we expect that momentum to continue. We engaged Michael Downey as interim CEO, and he has contributed significantly to improving our operations. We are also delighted to have hired Debra Armstrong, a seasoned and highly skilled leader, as our next CEO.

Improvements to board operations are underway as well, as we continue to operate in an increasingly professional and effective manner. We will keep building on this progress, including strengthening the board’s overall mix of skills and experience, as there are areas where we need additional expertise.

With that in mind, I’m pleased to share the following board-level changes:

Board Resignations

Lois Mackenzie and Robin Uchida have stepped down from the board. We extend our sincere thanks for their dedication and contributions to GymCan.

Board Additions

In accordance with our bylaws, we have appointed two members to fill these vacancies:

  • Michael Downey, who demonstrated strong leadership during his time as interim CEO. Michael needs no introduction, and he remains committed to the continued growth of gymnastics in Canada.
  • Sophie Kotsopoulos, a former provincial gymnast who currently leads the National Hockey League’s largest portfolio of marketing partners. Sophie brings her love of gymnastics, strong leadership skills, and extensive professional experience to help guide the sport forward.

Chair Position

In keeping with our commitment to continuous evolution, I have stepped down as Chair so that Michael Downey can assume the role. As a former CEO of GymCan, Michael is uniquely positioned to provide strategic leadership and support to Debra as she begins her tenure. During his time as interim CEO, Michael also developed a deep passion for gymnastics and is excited about the continued growth of our organization and our administration of the sport.

I will remain on the board, overseeing international liaison duties. I remain deeply committed to GymCan’s growth and success, with the ultimate goal of benefiting the entire Canadian gymnastics community. I’m energized by what lies ahead and the opportunities in front of us.

Please join me in welcoming Michael and Sophie to the board, and Michael to the position of Chair.
