Ottawa, ON (October 24, 2025) – Team Canada continues to make its mark on the international stage as rising stars Lia-Monica Fontaine and Aidan Li delivered outstanding performances in the individual finals at the 2025 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, currently taking place in Jakarta, Indonesia, from October 19–25.

Impressive World Championship Debuts

In their first-ever World Championships, both Canadian gymnasts displayed remarkable composure and quality in their performances.

At only 16 years old, Lia-Monica Fontaine shone brightly in the vault final, finishing second and capturing the silver medal with a total score of 14.033. She delivered two vaults marked by impressive amplitude and confident execution. In her first appearance at a senior World Championships, this performance highlights not only her exceptional talent but also the continued growth of women’s gymnastics in Canada. Lia-Monica is already establishing herself as one of the most promising young athletes in the national program.

“After qualifications, I knew I had the potential to make the final, but I didn’t expect to finish in the top three. Going into finals, I knew it was possible, but I tried not to think too much about it. When I saw some of the other gymnasts fall, I just told myself, ‘Do your best. You know how to do this. Trust your training’” said Lia-Monica Fontaine.

“When I was standing at the end of the runway, I kept repeating that to myself. And when I landed both vaults successfully, it felt so good — like I had truly accomplished something. There were only two gymnasts left, and when I saw my score put me in first, I heard the announcer say I was guaranteed a medal. I was so happy — I still can’t believe it!” said Lia-Monica Fontaine.

“It still hasn’t really sunk in that I was competing at the World Championships, let alone that I’m now a World silver medalist. Right now, it almost feels like just another medal — but I know it’s not. This one is very special, and I’m so proud of myself,” said Lia-Monica Fontaine.

“Lia-Monica’s medal was born from a dream and achieved through continuous hard work and exemplary discipline. The multidisciplinary team and coaches behind her played an important role in her success. Her ability to manage her emotions gives her an additional strength. She’s an exceptional athlete to work with” said Claude Pelletier, coach of Lia-Monica Fontaine.

Aidan Li competed in the pommel horse final, where he finished 8th with a total score of 12.366, including a difficulty score of 5.200 and an execution score of 7.166, further cementing his status as a rising star in Canadian men’s gymnastics. Despite having made a few small mistakes during his routine, his performance remains remarkable for his first participation in a world championship. Earlier in the competition, Aidan had already made history for Canada by achieving a record-breaking score on pommel horse during qualifications, solidifying his place among the most promising talents on the national team.

Mixed feelings. I am happy and excited to compete on the world stage with the top guys. Happy with the start to this quad. Looking forward to what’s to come in the rest of the quad.”  said, Aidan Li
